Stormy weather shortens swim for fundraiser
Marathon swimmer John De La Cruz of Pico Rivera, 47, aimed to swim 200 miles in Lake Powell to raise at least 50,000 for the Serra Foundation aiding the visually handicapped. Bad weather limited him to the lake end near Page, Arizona after six days of 14 hours of swimming daily, ending early due to rain and lightning. He was injured years earlier by a gunshot while camping with his son, and swims helped restore leg use. Local response in Southeast Los Angeles County fell short of expectations, though donors from Page supported him and his crew.
