Treatment expenses and the need for clotting factors drive the cost while only about 4 percent of affected people receive routine therapy. The study notes blood collection from three million pints is needed to prevent complications, and that voluntary donors remain a small share of supply.

MAO Enzyme Linked to Low Mood in Women
Scientists report higher monoamine oxidase MAO activity in 17 consistently depressed Worcester State Hospital outpatients compared with 19 nondepressed peers. They augmented MAO levels with self–made triggers, lowering MAO activity and briefly lifting mood. Researchers caution this is not a treatment but a step toward understanding brain chemistry and potential estrogen-based therapies.
