Ella Bears Down on Island Areas

SAN JUAN Puerto Rico AP Hurricane Ella moved inland over Haiti and threatened Jamaica and southeastern Cuba. The Weather Bureau said the season's third hurricane was centered about 650 miles west southwest of Port au Prince at 8 am, moving northwest at 17 mph with winds up to 110 mph near the center. Warnings extended along Haiti, with gale winds 150 miles offshore to the north and 75 miles to the south. The storm was expected to stay strong for about 12 hours as ships in its path were advised to seek port and small craft to remain ashore. Torrential rains hit Hispaniola, with the center roughly 700 miles from southern Florida. The hurricane could hit Cuba's southern coast and proceed into the Gulf of Mexico toward Gulf states and Mexico.

Reports Plane Crash in Sea near Beach Haven New Jersey

A beachgoer reported seeing a small one engine plane crash into the sea off Beach Haven New Jersey around 1:30 am. The Coast Guard had no missing planes and found no trace after search efforts. The report also mentions unrelated notes on federal expenditures and a separate Alaska flight incident.

Road Deaths Near 490 Estimate For Labor Day Traffic

Adpocated Press reports highway fatalities near 490 for the holiday period with 330 traffic deaths 68 drownings and 55 in miscellaneous accidents by 1 pm California leads in total deaths. The driver Isaias Rodriguez, 20, suffered major injuries and was reportedly speeding at about 100 miles an hour. Josephine Rockwell, 32, also died in the collision.

French oceanographer Fric de Bisschop, 66, died when his raft Tahiti Nui I wrecked on a Rakahanga reef in the northern Cook Islands after a 4 month voyage from Peru toward Tahiti.
