Freezing East and Midwest Weather Grips Nation
A frigid air mass draped the eastern United States while a colder spell swept the Midwest and upper plains. Readings dipped into the 20s and 30s in cities like Pittsburgh and Grand Rapids, with record lows in places such as Lansdale and San Gabriel. Temperatures across the West reached 94 in parts of Los Angeles. Light showers touched the Great Lakes region, but most of the nation stayed dry. The Weather Bureau noted the cold snap should continue for two weeks. Separately, a German Swede study linked sunspot activity to birth rates, suggesting genius correlates with spring sunspots.
