Simple Rites Mark Burial of Billy Rose in Mausoleum
Simple rites mark the burial of showman Billy Rose in a granite mausoleum at Westchester Hills Cemetery. Rabbi Edward E. Klein eulogized Rose as a self made American success story as sisters Polly Gottfish and Miriam Stern, actor John Payne, Elia Kazan, Harold Rome, and Paul Osborne attended. Rose died February 10, 1996 at 66, with a $50 million estate tied up in litigation over the Billy Rose foundation. The mausoleum cost $127,000 after executives pressured the estate, replacing the sisters lofty $500,000 wish. The 15 by 20 foot chamber features three stained glass windows of Rose’s life.
