Harris Survey Signals Weak GOP Prospects for 1974

Louis Harris reports Nixon era woes dragging Republicans in 1974 House races. Democrats hold a 63 to 31 lead among likely voters in a 1,491-household survey, an 8-point GOP drop since spring. The margin, toppling past 1964 levels, foresees heavy Midwest and West losses and weak GOP support among older voters amid Watergate fallout.

Mead says abortion is a necessary evil not a lifestyle

Anthropologist Margaret Mead told Planned Parenthood volunteers that she is 100 percent against abortion but regards it as a necessary backup due to societal failures in contraception education and resources. She urged a future where no woman turns to abortion and no unwanted births occur. In Beaumont Texas two teen prisoners escaped the 12th floor Jefferson County jail using a rope of torn sheets to descend the building.
