Col Abel Convicted in Spy Case May Face Death Penalty

Abel was found guilty on three counts including conspiracy to transmit military information to the Soviet government. The jury delivered a verdict after a nine day trial in which witness Rhodes testified Abel sold military data from 1951 to 1953 while assigned to Moscow. Abel used aliases and hid data in hollow objects, and he did not testify in his own defense. The case names Reino Hayhanen as the government's star witness, and prosecutors hailed the verdict as a severe blow to Soviet espionage. Abel, a veteran Soviet spy who entered the U.S. illegally from Canada in 1948, had a photographic studio in Brooklyn while gathering national defense data. The maximum penalties include death for conspiracy to transmit information, 10 years for conspiracy to gather, and five years for remaining in the U.S. without registering.
