Flournoy Denies Brown Conflict of Interest Charge
In a Sacramento campaign appearance Republican Houston Flournoy dismissed Democrat Edmund G. Brown Jr.s charge that a Flournoy aide is involved in a conflict of interest. Brown pressed Flournoy to repudiate Ford s surtax plan while both candidates debated for governor at Auburns Placer County Fairgrounds. Brown accused John Mayfield a North Coast Regional Coastal Commission member and Flournoy regional chairman of soliciting funds from interests before the commission. Flournoy rejected the accusation calling it a clumsy distraction and defended his campaign finance ties noting contributions came from Jim Nealis a retired Pacific Telephone employee who chairs the Flournoy for governor committee. Brown urged repudiation of the surtax and Flournoy promised consumer protection via an activist Department of Consumer Affairs and a housecleaning of regulatory appointees. Brown attacked the tax as a partisan rate hike while Flournoy argued for a surtax starting at about 25 000 family income. Brown opposed price controls on milk and criticized Brights political influence while Flournoy sought stronger competition and public representation on regulatory boards.

Cranston seeks more job funds for public service
California Senator Alan Cranston said he will push for up to 570000 additional public service jobs when Congress returns. He notes California unemployment at 8.2 percent versus 5.8 percent nationally and argues for a bill with up to 4 billion dollars to expand the program beyond the current 170000 jobs. He criticizes President Ford's 2.5 billion plan as too slow and restrictive for immediate California needs. Cranston links inflation to production and competition while warning against monopolistic cost shifts.

Democratic candidate Jesse Unruh skipped the televised state treasurer debate citing a prior commitment and refusing to appear with Republican John T. Kehoe over alleged untrue attacks. Kehoe called Unruh a pensioned politician while W. Wayne Fortner did not appear, leaving James Stanbery of Peace and Freedom as a write-in participant alongside Kehoe. The taping occurred at KPIX with broadcast planned on state public stations.
