A reader argues gifts for retirees should go beyond watches and luggage. He recounts anecdotes from a 1960s era retirement party, notes pension and profit sharing plans, and urges consulting the retiree on a fitting, meaningful token rather than a generic present.
In St Louis, a Detroit couple Wesley Copeland aged 29 and Goldie Copeland 27 held a black policeman hostage for six hours after barricading in a fifth floor room. The officer was shot when another officer drove the couple’s car to a station. Police say the suspects may not be charged with holding him, while one officer may have mistaken the hostage takers for suspects. Detective Sal Andrew Davis, 33, spoke with the man inside and confirmed the confrontation.
In San Diego a 24 year old woman Christine Jones shot James Robinson in the abdomen with an .82 calibre pistol then fled with him in a car. Robinson, 2, was described as in fair condition. Officers said Copeland and his wife held weapons and attempted to threaten Davis during negotiations. An officer was shot during the escape as police and suspects fled in a red Corvair. Copeland, suspected of hosting a hostage, faced possible charges and Detroit fugitive status was noted for Copeland.
