Water For Southland Porter Tunnel Near Completion
The Porter Tunnel, part of a multi billion dollar water project, nears completion as workers prepare to blast through a 23 foot diameter bore four miles through faulted mountains to bring Northern California water to the semi arid Southland. The long tunnel, oldest of four under the range, began in May 1950 and is 16 months behind schedule. Once concrete lined to 20 foot diameter it will deliver about 120 million gallons per hour. A cavern collapse in 1967 trapped 17 men for two days but caused no leaks. Twenty eight workers suffered injuries in incidents related to the project.
