Police Protest March House Witness Pay Encounters Pickets Defended as Normal

SAN FRANCISCO UM off duty policemen and firemen rallied in front of city hall to protest treatment of law enforcement after last month's Negro riots. About 400 counterdemonstrators picketed across Polk street. 110 arrests reported. The rally featured criticism of Patrolman Alvin J Johnson whose fatal shooting sparked the unrest in Hunters Point. James Rourke of the Teamsters called Johnson unjustly treated and Johnson claimed he fired only to halt a fleeing stolen car. Terry Francois condemned the rally’s racial overtones and counterpickets clashed amid heated exchanges. The event contrasted with a Washington hearing where witnesses testified about consultant payments to Luce and a House ethics inquiry into political influence.
