End to Vietnam War before 1968 elections unlikely says Reischauer

Edwin O. Reischauer, former U.S. ambassador to Japan, says little chance of end to Vietnam war before the 1968 elections. North Vietnam aims to force American withdrawal, he adds, unless the election dispels that hope. He advocates a gradual damping down of the war and a barrier below the DMZ to aid a negotiated settlement. In Bakersfield, Doyle Ray Pate, 42, was killed when struck by a car on Union Avenue.
