Pay Boost Ends Three-Week Shipyard Strike at Craig Yard
Craig Yard workers, members of APL-CIG, ratified an 11 cent per hour across-the-board pay raise and two additional paid holidays after a three-week strike that began September 19. The settlement came after talks aided by Federal Mediation with Craig Yard spokesmen stating crews will be recalled within a day or two following a yard-wide work survey. Jim Daniels, union West Coast director, said about 230 workers protested for contract demands. The union has also agreed with Long Beach Marine Repair Co and with Bethlehem and Todd Shipyards, affecting roughly 75, 300, and 400 employees respectively, with Todd handling two McCormick Line ships but not scheduled to resume work for two months.
