Patman chairs silent Watergate hearing with empty seats
In Washington Rep. Wright Patman led a Banking Committee session on the Watergate spying case as four top Nixon aides refused to testify. Only one Republican attended. the missing men were Clark MacGregor Matrice Stans John Mitchell and John Dean. Patman condemned Nixon for “an iron curtain of secrecy” and adjourned the hearing. Nearby, Javits and Schmitz urged fuller disclosure as Post and Post-Dispatch reports traced alleged GOP espionage and leaks. Cardinal Mindszenty arrived in Lisbon for services at a shrine named after him.
