Nobel physics prize to two Americans and a Briton

The Swedish Academy awarded the physics prize to John H. Van Vieck of Harvard, Philip Anderson of Princeton and Bell Labs, and Sir Nevill Mott of Cambridge. The chemistry prize went to Ilya Prigogine of the Free University of Brussels. Prigogine also directs at the University of Texas. The physics winners share $145,000 and were honored for work on electron interactions and magnetic disordered systems with applications to lasers and materials science.

Balloon tests map oil emission paths off Santa Barbara

A balloon hovered a few hundred feet above the Santa Barbara Channel to trace wind patterns for emissions from tankers serving the planned Sohio terminal. The 33 foot balloon, towed by Coast Guard cutter, carried Dr. Thomas Heinsheimer and Peter Neushul as it drifted south, with landfall expected near Ventura or Santa Monica.

Two Czech Airline Workers Hijack Jet For Asylum

In Frankfurt West Germany two CSA employees from Karlovy Vary wearing uniforms seized a domestic jetliner with loaded pistols, held 45 passengers and three crew for two hours, then surrendered. Identified as Vaslislavy T. 29 and Ruzena V. 22. They sought political asylum.

Inmates burglarize Long Beach City Jail for drugs and gems

Long Beach jail inmates pilfered drugs, jewelry, and cash from the police evidence room using a stolen wrench to access an opening between the sixth floor quarters and the fifth floor storage. Some loot recovered. detectives linked the theft to a 9 year old death and ongoing investigations. An inmate, Roger Young of Riverside, confessed to the thefts as authorities inventory 300,000 pieces of evidence.

Venezuela carrier orders 2009 jets for $20 million

Venezuela line Linea Aeropostal Venezolana LAV announces a 320 million order for two McDonnell Douglas Series 50 high capacity DC twinjet transports. Deliveries are set for September and October next year from Douglas Aircraft Co. Long Beach. Airlines expands to five Series 50 DCs with nine DC9s.

Group claims AID United Way at war

A statewide citizens group accuses Los Angeles County’s two major charities AID and United Way of waging a charity war that hurts donors and the needy. The Concerned Citizens for Charity, based in San Francisco, calls the clash the worst thing to happen to charity in Los Angeles. It launched a full page ad and a news conference urging an end to the dispute and urging United Way to stop rejecting AID gifts. The CIC portrays United Way as expanding at AID’s expense and says AID previously passed undesignated gifts to United Way to benefit its member charities. It cites United Way’s refusal to act as middleman and claims United Way threatens charities with loss of funding if they take more AID contributions.

Carter Meets Senate Leaders on Panama Pact Problems

President Carter conferred with Senate leaders on the Panama Canal treaty as lawmakers and experts debated its fate. Senate Republicans said consensus was the pact has problems in the Senate, with discussions ranging from renegotiation to inaction. Testimony from four international affairs experts split between ratification and rejection, warning the treaty could heighten Western Hemisphere instability. A Senate trip to Panama for fact finding was discussed, with Sen. Frank Church urging a first hand look at defenses.

University of Washington researchers study how people react to a barnyard picture of an octopus funded by a 25,000 grant as part of over 101.3 million in federal research money for the year ending June 1976. Dr. Geoffrey Loftus says the work may reveal how people perceive the unusual and aid aircraft instrument design and advertising.
