South Gate Technicians Photograph Sputnik Beeps
Firestone Tire and Rubber Co engineers in South Gate translate Sputnik beeps into light and photographs. John L. Malgaard, J. Bill Fisner, and Hugh Gibson monitor signals from 500 miles up, using an oscilloscope to graph telementer data. Amateur Radio Club members report signals vary from seconds to thirty minutes, correlating with Sputnik’s 95 minute orbit, but they refuse to reveal what the beeps say.

Lakewood Water Firm Seeks 40 Percent Rate Hike
Lakewood Water and Power Co. asks state regulators to approve a water rate increase between 40 and 50 percent, higher than the 25 percent under review. The move halts a three day public hearing, as attorney John Amos Fleming files an amended application within a week. The company serves about 31,300 homes in Lakewood East Long Beach and Downey, with current bills around 3.75 to 4.50 dollars under the proposed hike. The board calls the 23 percent rise a useless gesture, citing inflation and changes since the initial request. Hearings resume in December.
