Five Navy pilots detail planned raids on North Viet Nam airfield
Five former Navy pilots described missions by Attack Squadron 145 aboard the USS Constellation to strike Quang Lang airfield in North Vietnam beginning December 1971 under a "protective reaction" rule. They said reconnaissance planes mostly photographed after strikes, that as many as aircraft took part, and several pilots later resigned citing disillusionment with the war.

Senate delays Abrams confirmation amid Lavelle dispute
The Senate voted to retire John S. McCain Jr. as full admiral but delayed action on Gen. Creighton W. Abrams as Army Chief of Staff. The delay follows the Lavelle air raids controversy, with Mansfield signaling planned debate on civilian authority over the military.
