Barred Despite FBI Clearance Hew Blacklist of Scientists
Washington reports that the Department of Health Education and Welfare kept hundreds of scientists off advisory panels for research funding. The New York Times obtained a blacklist from the National Institute of Mental Health listing 48 names with two sheets current ineligible and not nominated recently but ineligible in the past. About 32 of the 48 were confirmed on the blacklist after interviews, with others contesting or unaware of their status. The total number barred across HUW is unclear, but estimates range from 200 to 500. Scientists express anger over the practice.

Two Orange County doctors named to state medical board panel
From Our State Bureau Two Orange County physicians were among 14 doctors appointed Wednesday to the District Review Committee of the state Board of Medical Examiners by Gov Reagan Dr Arthur F Thompson of Newport Beach and Dr Frederick M Turnbull Jr of Costa Mesa were named to replace physicians from El Centro and Riverside on the committee Thompson is the only Democrat among the 14 new appointments and six re appointments announced by the governor Members of the board serve four year terms and receive necessary expenses.
