Cargomaster Completes Record Underwater Flight Tests
The Douglas C-133 Cargomaster, America’s largest cargo plane, endured 36 hours underwater testing starting July 1, 1961, in a multi-month program at Douglas Aircraft Division. Submerged in a million-gallon tank, it faced 14 months of near-continual stresses, totaling 12,000 simulated flights with hydraulic lifts and pressure to mimic real flight loads. No damage was found, and the fatigue study aims for 600,000 total hours under Air Force contract, seeking the most strenuous test to date.
