Memoirs reveal De Gaulle warned JFK on Vietnam entanglement
In May 1961 President Kennedy told Charles de Gaulle the United States would make Indochina a bulwark against the Soviet Union. De Gaulle warned that intervention would be an endless quagmire, a view echoed in his memoirs covering 1950 to 1962. The volume notes Kennedy’s advisors later pressed for deeper Saigon involvement, while De Gaulle recalled Kennedy signaling a broader plan to erect a Soviet deterrent in Indochina.
