Burglars threaten Hammer family as officer stops stand off
In Pacific Palisades the son of Armand Hammer confronted two burglars early Sunday. One suspect, 21 year old Gary Smart, surrendered after police used bullhorns to talk him into dropping a gun. The other suspect and former housekeeper Sheri Pylate, 25, were taken into custody after being found on a neighbor’s porch. Inside the home investigators found paintings moved, furniture overturned, clothing strewn, and walls scrawled with the phrase Say Hello to Daddy.

Ford signs law return to standard time for four months
President Ford signed a law returning the United States to standard time for four months starting October 27. The measure amends the Emergency Daylight Saving Time Energy Conservation Act, enacted last year during a fuel shortage to extend daylight for waking hours. Standard time ends February 23, 1975.
