Woman killed and four injured in Long Beach traffic
Gladys A. Wernesen of 122 East Plymouth Street was struck while crossing Long Beach Boulevard at Plymouth Street at 1:55 a.m. She died 20 minutes later at Memorial Hospital. Driver Willan Pool of 326 West 14th Street was cited for failure to produce a license. Four others were treated for injuries in two separate collisions, including Joseph A. Tani, Julia T. Anderson, Robert B. Boulware, and Lona Raut in incidents on Atlantic Avenue, Miami Avenue, and Temple and Fourth Street.

Sr. Manuel Gallegos announced the appointment of three administrators in the Downey Unified School District on Thursday. Jim Copeland, principal of Rives Elementary, becomes principal of the Physically Handicapped School succeeding Dr. Charles Koontz, now with the Los Angeles County Schools Office. Shirley Holz, Spanish teacher at Griffiths Junior High, is named dean of girls at East Junior High. Gary Gerken, math teacher at East Junior, is named assistant principal at Bast.
