Mitchell Reveals Tripling of Wiretaps and Arrests
Federal wiretaps in the first half of this year were three times the total for all of 1989, as Attorney General John N. Mitchell defended increased surveillance. He told the International Association of Police Chiefs in Atlantic City that 133 taps were authorized this year, with arrests and indictments rising, and noted state taps added last year. He argued the expanded use targets gambling, narcotics, and extortion, not fishing expeditions, and urged enforcement of the 1968 Crime Control Act.
