China blasts U S stance on Taiwan and arms policy

Chinese premier Li Xiannian told the Asian Wall Street Journal in Beijing that the United States has no business voicing how China should settle Taiwan. Another premier Teng Hsiao-ping said peaceful solutions are possible if the U S does not interfere. Li reaffirmed Beijing’s claim to Taiwan and warned against arming Nationalists after diplomatic ties with the United States. The report contrasts with U S statements and notes U S–Taiwan trade would continue, and cites Mao's past remarks on counterrevolutionaries.
