Duane George retires after four decades with the Long Beach Recreation Department. Starting in 1980 in a converted home clubhouse, he rose to assistant director as staff grew from 17 to nearly 100 full-time and 400 part-time workers. He recalls the Great Depression, the 1933 quake, and the 1956 bond issue that expanded parks. George plans travel with his wife Eva, then return to Long Beach to continue service.
