U.S. warns 37 states over nursing home standards
Health Secretary Elliott Richardson said 27 states face a February deadline to improve nursing home standards or risk losing federal Medicaid funds. He listed 37 states and the District of Columbia with substandard fire safety sanitation and medical services after a survey at Nixon's request. The notice names Arkansas California Connecticut DC Delaware Georgia Hawaii Idaho Illinois Indiana Iowa Kansas Kentucky Louisiana Maine Maryland Michigan Minnesota Mississippi Montana Nevada North Carolina North Dakota New Mexico New York Ohio Oklahoma Oregon Pennsylvania South Carolina South Dakota Tennessee Utah Vermont Washington Wisconsin West Virginia Wyoming. In Congress a Senate vote approved a 250 million program to fund nutritious hot meals for elderly Americans, with a plan for 100 million in 1973 and 150 million in 1974. The conference also heard Housing Secretary Romney urge private solutions and a one million dollar federal grant for low income housing sponsors. The oldest delegate, 95-year-old J. Stevens of Salt Lake City, attended with plans for his sixth marriage. In Bangkok, Surin Province reports a 10 000 profit from this year's elephant roundup, a top tourist attraction.
