Versailles palace saved by lavish Paris fundraiser
A French committee led by Baroness Guy de Rothschild hosted a 17th century style gala at Versailles to raise funds for preservation. Wealthy guests from Paris, New York, London and beyond paid 1000 francs for blue silk tickets and 23 dollars for programs as couture shows and entertainment unfolded despite cold halls and minimal heat. The event, featuring designers and stars from Paris and Nureyev to Grace Kelly, netted 260000.
