LBJ approves sweeping 3 billion federal cutbacks
President Johnson announced a 3 billion reduction in federal spending for the current fiscal year with across the board cuts in agencies including Health, Education and Welfare and Agriculture. He indicated further revisions may occur and rejected an imminent tax increase, citing a robust economy and productive workers as the basis for restraint. The plan also targets a 953 billion fiscal 1967 operacy cutback and mirrors caution amid global tensions in the Middle East. Johnson spoke after recovering from recent surgery and emphasized economy health and dollar soundness.
