Zalek starts work furlough as convict in San Francisco
Matthew Zalek a 46 year old robber is the first inmate to try the prison work furlough program at San Quentin. He will work as a building maintenance man for an automobile firm at 150 dollars weekly and live in the prison during nights. He faces a parole hearing on March 13 and has been at the prison since 1962 after a Siskiyou County robbery and assault conviction. Most earnings go to his prison account after deductions for car expenses and food.

Tragic Fire Claims 14 Disabled Children in Froissy
A brick home in Froissy Beauvais, France, burned killing fourteen handicapped children aged 10 to 14 on the second floor. Five in Family Perish in Salem NH Home Fire
A predawn fire in Salem New Hampshire claimed the lives of a couple and three of their five children. Grandmother Rita Rae escaped with two other children Theresa and Carolyn. Police say Robert Rae and his wife Ann died in separate rooms while the three children Roberta James and Evelyn were found on the top floor. Theresa and Carolyn survived by leaping from a second story window.
