Tougher Pollution Standards Adopted
SAN FRANCISCO. The State Air Resources Board rejected staff work and adopted tougher air quality standards for smoke dust and other particles as well as sulfur dioxide from cars refineries power plants and pulp mills. The board cut the proposed 0.1 parts per million sulfur dioxide limit to 0.04 and halved the 200 micrograms per cubic meter particle limit to 100. Visibility was raised from 7 to 10 miles. The action completes California air quality standards and follows earlier approvals for nitrogen dioxide carbon monoxide oxidants and hydrogen sulfide. Advisory members voiced concern the new limits may be unattainable but supported the tighter rules.
