Red Cross in Long Beach ends its free blood distribution policy for hospital patients. Patients must deposit 25 per pint, to be forfeited if not replaced within 90 days after discharge. The service becomes a true blood bank with deposits funded by replacements.
A Detroit area grocery market owner had his home bombed early today causing broken windows and a damaged garage door with no injuries. Police say the explosion occurred at the attached garage of Carl Lauri, 40, owner of an east side market, who hinted he had enemies but offered no further details.
A Santa Fe streamliner derailed after colliding with a downed Marine jet near El Toro airport. Brakeman Pat Schamber lifted pilot 2nd Lt. Phillip Schmidt from the flames moments before the wreck exploded. Schmidt, unhurt but shaken, was taken for observation. no passengers were harmed.
President Eisenhower flies to Augusta Georgia for a 10 day golf and work holiday. He is joined by staff and guest George Champion, president of Chase Manhattan Bank, both members of Augusta National. This marks his 21st trip to the club since 1952 with a mix of work and golf planned during the stay. Mrs Eisenhower will join by train, delaying her departure from the White House.
