Evaporator Shutdown After 7000 Gallons of Radioactive Waste Spill
A newly installed evaporator at Richland Washington spewed 7000 gallons of deadly radioactive waste onto the ground and will remain shut down pending a full investigation. An Atomic Energy Commission spokesman said investigators have not determined the cause of the malfunction in the $7 million unit, which had operated since November. An automatic alarm cut production Wednesday and a vertical pipe sent waste above ground, leaving a two inch deep pool over a 35 by 6 yard area. The ABC plans to bury dirt containing the waste. The evaporator had been deployed after a prior spill this year that released 115,000 gallons below ground.
