Study links IQ gaps to sociocultural factors not race
Riverside UC sociologist Dr. Jane Mercer reports that seven sociocultural factors erase about 15 IQ point gaps between white, Black, and Chicano groups. Her analysis on 180 persons per group found initial 30 percent variance due to ethnicity shrank to under 1 percent after factoring in family achievement beliefs linguistic barriers maternal participation anxiety testing familiarity neighborhood segregation and family ties. The remaining 1 percent could be tied to unmeasured physical attributes.
