He and his Japanese wife Candy plan to leave Japan unless prosecution or defense appeals within 14 days. The court ordered payment of about $20 in court costs. Defense and prosecution indicated they will not appeal. A visa for Candy is being processed normally. The case strained US Japan relations but drew little immediate public reaction.
