Quake Testing by Caltech Engineers Uses Vibration Boxes
Caltech engineers George W. Tousner and Donald E. Housner use 1 500 pound vibration generators to shake scaled structures. The devices attached to buildings bridges and dams simulate earthquakes at controllable magnitudes to measure how much energy structures absorb and how their dynamic properties change under stress. Each unit measures 46 by 26 by 15 inches powered by a 134 horsepower motor and can vary weights and speeds to reproduce a range of quakes.
