Lansing reports the Republican led Michigan legislature killed Governor George Romney's major objective in office the reform of the state's tax structure. The action halts Romney's tax reform agenda as the house voted down the proposal amid legislative battles in mid 1960s.
Senate Finance Chairman Harry F. Byrd of Virginia voices strong opposition to President Kennedy's 11 billion dollar tax reduction proposal, urging substantial spending cuts instead. He says the administration plans higher spending, warns the economy could suffer if the tax cut is borrowed, and affirms he will oppose any bill worsening the deficit.
Chicago based UPI reports Joseph W. Halina of ITT Paramus New Jersey told the National Automation Conference that automation will remove the need for weekly pay checks. He predicted workers may never handle their checks and any remaining copies would serve only to show to spouses.
United Nations Secretary General Thant asked today to secure safe conduct from the United States for Portuguese rebel Captain Henry Galvao, a central figure in a 1961 mutiny aboard the liner Santa Maria. Galvao, in exile in São Paulo, faces Portuguese crimes and may be extradited if Lisbon requests it when testifying before the UN trusteeship committee on colonial policy.
