Forgotten Man of Augusta Affects a 44 Year Stay
In Augusta Maine Melvin Whittum a 66 year old resident who at 17 burglarized a home and was committed to a maximum security ward has spent 44 years in state psychiatric care. Officials say institutionalization has become the real problem making release difficult. He recently walked downtown with an escort for the first time in 15 years and remains labeled schizophrenic though doctors note the label matters little now.
