Smithsonian Displays 67-Carat Victoria-Transvaal Diamond
The 67.89 carat champagne gem, set in a 108-diamond yellow gold necklace, is the Smithsonian Institution’s largest gem since the Hope diamond. Donated by Leonard and Victoria Wilkinson, the stone was cut in 1950 from Premier mine material and previously shown at the Brussels World’s Fair. The Wilkinsons also gifted several other diamond pieces and jewelry.

Burns faults Carter tax plans for business anxiety
Federal Reserve Chairman Arthur Burns told the Senate Banking Committee that President Carter's tax proposals and other changes to business taxes threaten business confidence. He warned eliminating capital gains preferences would tax capital and blamed it for a sick stock market, while defending some corporate tax breaks to spur investment. Burns noted a possible recession can be avoided with prudent policy, and discussed a slight tightening of money growth targets ahead of his January departure from the Fed. The dollar’s decline against major currencies was cited as hindering inflation control and boosting import costs.
