RAF and ships suffer major wartime disaster
A British air force four engine transport crashed off Italy killing 52 aboard including 46 Italian paratroopers and six British crew. Simultaneously a French freighter, the Maori, reportedly broke up in the Atlantic with 99 crew. A French rescue team dropped rafts while search planes and ships combed the Ligurian Sea for survivors. The Maori disaster followed a large nickel ship distress off La Rochelle and a burning British tanker Heythrop with 56 crew and five wives rescued by the Showa Ventura.

KPOT goes off air as FCC shuts teen radio
KPOT a youth oriented FM station with a two bedroom HQ and a closet announcer booth was shut down by the FCC four days after going on air. Manager Brad Sobel 19 says the move shocked them as officers cited monitored broadcasts. The station aired classical and rock music with an eight hour day in a ten mile range using Army surplus gear. Sobel denies drug promotion and says the call letters were a playful lure for students.
