Cranston urges California to deny park logging permits
Senator Alan Cranston urged the California Board of Forestry to reject timber companies proposals to cut redwoods in the area slated for an expanded Redwood National Park. He expects House and Senate action in January to add 48,000 acres to the park, backed by a letter from Senate Majority Leader Robert Byrd. Senator Hayakawa opposed the expansion, warning of job losses in timber dependent Northern California. Cranston noted existing and planned timber harvest permits within the expansion area and urged continued denial.
