Lockheed studied hydrogen craft for 4000 mph plane
NASA awarded Lockheed-California a 15 month, 270000 dollar contract to study a liquid hydrogen powered 200 passenger airliner capable of 6000 mile missions at 4000 mph. The plan uses five turbojets for takeoff and five ramjets for cruise. The project aims to show a feasible hypersonic design with minimal ground sonic impact. Hawkins praised hydrogen as clean and energy rich, noting coal could supply hydrogen, and a fleet of 100 to 120 planes over 20 years could save about 10 billion versus synthetic fuel. He cautioned government support would be needed.
