Oil Tank Fire In San Pedro Engulfs Old Storage Tank
A spectacular but harmless blaze erupted in an old storage tank at Standard Oil in San Pedro when sparks fell on oil soaked timbers. About 45 county fire companies battled the hour long fire directed by Chief James Page. The flames began around 12:30 pm and quickly spread to the wooden roof, with embers blackening nearby grass near the storage farm between Cadgington and West Mont drives east of Western Avenue.

Peterson named regional man of the year for Civil Defense work
Evar P. Peterson regional emergency services coordinator for Long Beach received the Presidential Citation regional man of the year at the 21st annual US Civil Defense Council conference in Boston.
