Canal pact needs House OK, too, insists professor

Canal not significant, says top U S general

General Frederick Kroesen of Army Forces Command told the Birmingham Rotary Club that the Panama Canal has no military significance and should be transferred to Panamanians. Poll shows Californians split on Panama Canal treaties

A California poll of 1,058 adults conducted Sept 2 to Oct 10 found 49 percent disapprove of the canal treaties while 85 percent approve overall and 16 percent have no opinion. Northern Californians favor retention of U S control in defense, Southern Californians oppose the terms by a 24 to 30 margin.
