Rogers orders passport oath for all applicants ends long dispute
Secretary of State William P. Rogers orders a mandatory oath of allegiance for every passport applicant, ending a dispute dating to the 1950s. State Department officials say the decision follows a 4 July district court directive and despite recent Supreme Court rulings easing passport restrictions. The move faces possible ACLU appeal, but White House and Congress backed retention, arguing U.S. overseas officials should also swear the oath.
