Scientists paint Earth's invisible magnetic mantle in space
Honolulu scientists report a first in visualizing the planet's magnetic field by painting a long strand of ionized barium along magnetic lines at 225 miles. The operation, part of Project Barbizon, used rockets from Kauai to map field lines and study interactions with solar radiation and potential debris behavior.

X-ray screen may cut exposure up to twentyfold
New X-ray intensifying screens described by Dr. Robert Buchanan of Lockheed could reduce medical X-ray exposure by up to 20 times. The device, funded by an Atomic Energy Commission grant, uses a rare earth phosphor to convert X-rays to light, enabling dose reductions even with blue sensitive film and potentially with green sensitive film when available.
