Damaged Meindert Hobbema Painting At National Gallery
A woman damaged the Meindert Hobbema painting Village By A Pool at the National Gallery of Art by raking a nail file across its width. The extent of damage cannot be determined until varnish is removed and examined. The painting, valued at a minimum $100,000, was not cut through the canvas. The woman was found by a gallery guard with a file in hand and admitted for mental observation.

Man Brought Down by Slow Horses Betting Scam
In London a man named Shipton stole about 1.4 million pounds over six years to fund a betting habit on slow horses. He falsified company books, paid others vast sums, and used a lavish life including a town house and a Jaguar while his wife lived with him, unaware of the scheme until police investigated. Judge Mervyn Jones jailed Shipton for six years.
