Scaffold Tragedy Is Probed at IMS
An angry panel of officials opened an inquiry into the slow motion collapse of a homemade scaffold at Indianapolis Motor Speedway that killed Edwin K. Steers and William Craig and injured 62 others during a Memorial Day start of a 500 mile race. Coroner Roy B. Storms faulted track management for years of inaction amid protests over makeshift towers. Indiana Attorney General Edwin K. Steers said a clerk will decide if safety rules can be imposed on the privately run facility. The 30 foot aluminum scaffold, jammed with 75 to 130 spectators, fell as crowds leaned forward to watch pre race activities. Linder operated the scaffold. Shortridge, the victims’ father in law, said tickets were sold for 5 and 10 dollars, with no Speedway collection.
