High Courts Ruling Limits Gulf Lands Ownership to Three Miles
The Supreme Court held that Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama own submerged gulf lands only three miles from shore while Texas and Florida own rights to about 10.45 miles. The seven member court split left precise state divisions unclear as Chief Justice Warren and Justice Clark abstained. The decision could unlock about 300 million dollars in current revenues and future leases, with Interior Department leases from Louisiana already in escrow. Justice Harlan wrote the majority opinion. Justice Black dissented on Florida.
