White House taps Dr Robert Stone for NIH director
The White House announced Robert Stone of the University of New Mexico as incoming director of the National Institute of Health. Stone, 51, a pathologist, previously dean of medicine and health sciences at UNM, would replace Robert Q. Marston. no Senate confirmation is required. He formerly taught at UCLA. The report also notes Navy chaplain candidate Diana Pohlman, future Confederate Heroes Day legislation in Texas, and various brief items.

Four luxury cars driven in high speed chase end with sailors jailed
Memorial Day 1978 remembered after a light speed pursuit in Long Beach where four stolen Lincoln Mercury cars were taken from a dealer. Three sailors from Lone Beach Naval Station were booked for auto theft and two suspects remained at large. Carlous Dee Carter, 15, and Von Elliott White, 20, were captured after wrecks and hideouts near Fifth Street, Maine Avenue, Cherry Avenue, and the Artesia Freeway. A fourth car was found at the Long Beach Naval Station.

Carnival rig plunges off cliff killing four on highway
A carnival truck veered off State Route 142 near here and plunged 800 feet after striking two cars. The driver Edwin Calwell, 28, of San Francisco, and passenger Charles Grimatey Jr., 28, of Utah, died alongside five relatives of the second auto’s occupants, including Ernest Sorensen, 84, and Agnes Schefcik, 73. Judge W. Wallace Kent, 87, of the Sixth U.S. Circuit, died of a heart attack in Kalamazoo.
