Taft seeks lead role for favorite son delegation
Senator Robert Taft Jr of Ohio announced his candidacy as a favorite son for the 1972 presidential primary to head off anti Nixon attacks from outside Ohio. He pledged the Ohio delegation to Nixon at the Republican National Convention and said there is no plan to take over the state party. Taft denied any desire for the vice presidency and said debts from last year’s campaign remain the responsibility of his committees.
